From clay to sand – new season, new opponents

veluweFew days ago, on Wednesday July 1st, the Dutch soccer organisation, the KNVB, published the new team divisions for the season 2015-2016. There was a rather surprising outcome for the flagship of GVC: Last season, GVC1 played in the Betuwe, an area to the south of Wageningen known for its rich soils and delicious fruits. For the coming season however, the KNVB has placed GVC1 in a competition with soccer clubs from the north of Wageningen. Most clubs are located in the Veluwe, an area with poor sandy soils and lots of forest and heather fields.

This new competition division will have some consequences for the players of GVC1. First of all: On the way to the home grounds of the opponents, they will have to drive extra carefully, as a red deer or a wild boar might suddenly cross the road. Not only do the players have to drive slower, they also will have to drive longer – many of the opponents are more than 25 km away. Lastly, they will have to drive (and play football, let’s not forget that) more frequently: instead of 12, this season GVC1 will play in a competition with 14 teams. Hence a real competition, with some tough opponents, namely…

HOOO, STOP ! WAIT… What do you stay, KNVB? … Oh, okay… Guys, here is an update: Our respected rival wvv Wageningen, also placed in this new league, complained about the long driving distances. Based on their complaint, the KNVB has decided to undo the new arrangement. Together with the first team of the soccer club Wageningen, GVC1 is now placed in its ‘normal’ league again (Saturday east 4A). The opponents are: Krayenhoff Sat., DVV Sat., Kesteren, Hatert Sat., Excelsior Z., Oranje Blauw, EMM, AZ 2000, AFC Arnhem Sat., SCH Sat., Oranje sc Sat., Alverna Sat. and Wageningen.

Fortunately, GVC1 managed to increase in quality and quantity: New candidates for the selection of Imre Overeem and Ruben Guykens are, amongst others, Evert Voskamp (SVHA), Freek van Tongeren (WVV Wageningen), Frank van Raffe (ONA), Rijk Dersjant (BZS Beusichem) and Victor van Saltbommel (MSC Meppel).

Although the competition will not start before September, GVC1 does already have its first matches in August:

The recreational teams of GVC are looking forward to start season 2015/2016 at 22 August at the 11th Colourfull Tournament. This tournement is played at de Zoom and is jointly organised with WVV Wageningen.

AID Sportday

Last, but not least, an important event: At Sunday 16th August the AID Sportday is organised (an introductory event for the new students of Wageningen). GVC will be present to raise new members. Current members of GVC: We need about 10 volunteers. If you could help us out, please let us, the board, now. This is how you can reach us: board[at]gvc-wageningen.nl. Or: just approach us during one of the summer training sessions.
